Kentuckians have found ingenious ways to merge the best sweets, like good old fashioned doughnuts with distilled pleasures to accompany southern meals.

When travelling through Berea, Danville, Corbin and many other places in Kentucky along the I-95, remember these counties are still dry.

A good place to stock up on alcohol for a Kentucky road trip is at the Liquor Barn located on Beaumont Centre Parkway in Lexington. This big boozy warehouse satisfies every kind of alcoholic need. While there grab one of the gourmet sandwiches at the corner deli located inside the store. For a liquor store, they also have a fine selection of meats and cheeses.

For a dry region, it’s surprisingly easy to find bundles of stimulating alcohol-based items to munch on. From a tangy orange beer cheese spread, to tiny bundles of pecan deliciousness called bourbon balls, Kentuckians conceal their affection for booze inside imaginative and delicious treats.

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail

If that’s not enough to whet your whistle, try trekking a path of seven distilleries along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, where distillers such as Jim Bean have been perfecting their drink for over 200 years. Stop off at Makers Mark and dip a bottle into their special red sealing wax. Add a personal touch or personalize a gift for friends back home. Many distilleries are open Monday to Saturday but there’s no dipping on Sundays and dippers must be 21 or older.

To get a complete list of the attractions along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail head to Louisville and get a complete map of distilleries leading out from the town off the I-64 and I-65 or e-mail the Kentucky Distiller’s Association.

Burke’s Bakery and Delicatessen, Danville

Road trips are often diet killers. Long hours driving require high fuel snacks like donuts and cookies. Skip the chains though, and head over to the family owned Burke’s Bakery and Delicatessen at 121 West Main Street, Danville – your lips with thank you, your hips…not so much.

Hand made cupcakes and donuts baked fresh every morning remain, after four generations, a tradition at this tiny shop in Danville. Bakers use all natural ingredients in their succulent pastries including real butter and eggs. Get there early, the handmade smiley gingerbread men literally run out of the shop.

Grab a bag of "butterflake buns", one of Burke’s specialties or "butter biscuits", a Southern must, before heading off. And don’t dare leave town without devouring a "nut dainties" cookie – one-bite pecan delights – or the brownies, still rolled out the old fashioned way on wooden cutting boards.

Avoid arriving late during Thanksgiving and Christmas though when thousands of buns are sold in a few hours, or you may only catch a whiff of the fresh baked goods.

Once stocked up on road trip snacks, it’s time to hit the road and discover the many things to do in Berea, Danville, Corbin counties, Kentucky.
